Is there a way to define a horizontal widget area and have it on the front page only?

Also, your knowledge base has instructions on defining a custom widget area says a custom widget “can be assigned to any individual post / page” but doesn’t say what the mechanism is for matching up a widget area, once you’ve created it, and a specific page
