I purchased Vintage Immersed today, for the benefit of being able to get ongoing updates and bug fixes. (I had downloaded the theme nine years ago, during a promotional period where it had been offered free. Last year a WordPress update caused a function to disappear entirely — I’m currently using a plugin to cover the function — so I concluded I really need to secure a current healthy version, sooner rather than later.)
The problem I’ve encountered is that because I have the identically-named promo theme (version 2.2) already installed, WordPress can’t install the updated version as a new theme — it only offers to replace the one in current use on my live site. I imagine this would cause a fair few problems, as a result of the changes made from various plugins I’ve applied over the last nine years. I had intended to apply the new theme on a staging site first, to verify all was okay before migrating it to the production site.
Is that intention possible? Is there a way to have both themes active at once — perhaps by re-naming one or the other? Or is my only option to overwrite the 2012 version and hope for the best?
(The 2012 version has been customised directly. This time around, I wanted to leave the purchased version unchanged and apply my customisations to a child theme…because the internet tells me I should have done that the first time, and hindsight always comes too late.)
Hi.,
Many updates are coming https://prnt.sc/10n21ni so we can not update those changes in your end. So please install our latest version separately then compare and proceed.
I have not requested any changes, and I am aware of the many updates between versions 2.2 and 2.9.
“…please install our latest version separately…”
My original post had been asking how I can install it separately. It explained that had been my intention — so I could compare 2.9 on a staging site (using plugin ‘SP Staging’, because I’m no developer) with 2.2 on the live site — but WordPress won’t install two identically named themes. So I can’t install it separately, to make this comparison!
Please be clear. Does ‘Please install our latest version separately then compare and proceed‘ actually mean ‘Yes, your only option is to overwrite the old version, see how much of your live site becomes broken, and attempt repairs/rebuilds in real time.’?

Unfortunately, the install had in fact been adjacent to my needs, because instead of the theme being installed on the staging site instead of the live site as I had requested, it was installed — and activated — on only the live site…which now has a problem, and I’ve been unable to resolve it: when I click on any individual portfolio item, the theme loads a blank page (desktop view), or (mobile view) it loads a page that says:
There has been a critical error on this website. Learn more about troubleshooting WordPress.
How can this be repaired?
Hi.,
We checked your site but “portfolio items” working fine – https://prnt.sc/10yrp0g check it here.
To understand what I’m talking about, please view as a site visitor. For example, this link directs to a portfolio item, yet only shows a blank page.
I’m aware the portfolio items are listed within the front-end, and this is what your previous message showed an image of. However, when the items are visited on the live site, clicking on any portfolio item results in the aforementioned blank views, as pictured here: https://prnt.sc/10yszfb
Hi.,
Shall we deactivate your third-party plugins to check this issue? Let us know
Thank you, yes, you may deactivate plugins for testing. My site has been backed up.
